OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS, I'VE BEEN HEARING A RADIO MESSAGE FROM THE NY AREA NURSES UNION....IN THE 90 SECOND SPOT, A SPOKESWOMAN ACCUSES HOSPITALS OF "SHORT STAFFING" OUT OF GREED AND ALLOWING UNSAFE CONDITIONS FOR THE PATIENTS....
1) WHEN NURSES GO ON STRIKE FOR HIGHER PAY, THEY ARE ALLOWING THEIR GREED TO OVER COME THEIR CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PATIENTS.
2) WHEN HOSPITALS HAVE TO PAY HIGHER COSTS (INCLUDING LABOR) THEY MUST CUT PERSONNEL.....
3)....MAKING PROFIT IS NOT GREED.....PROFIT PAYS THE BILLS.....HOSPITALS HAVE OTHER STAFF TO PAY, LIKE DOCTORS, X-RAY TECHS, SECRETARIAL, FOOD SERVICE, JANITORIAL AND SECURITY PEOPLE......THEN THERE IS ELECTRICITY, HEATING AND COOLING, PHONE AND COMPUTER COSTS.....
4) THE HOSPITAL IS A BUSINESS...THEY MUST OPERATE WITHIN A BUDGET OR GO BANKRUPT....
THE NURSES UNION PLAYS ON OUR SYMPATHY, CITING THEIR COMPASSION FOR THE PATIENTS....YET THEY WILL GO ON STRIKE AND PUNISH THOSE PATIENTS BY LEAVING THEM ALONE OR IN THE HANDS OF LESS EXPERIENCED PEOPLE FOR MONEY.....IF THE NURSES TRULY CARED FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR PATIENTS, THEN THEY WOULD TAKE A PAY CUT SO THAT THE HOSPITAL CAN AFFORD TO INCREASE THE NURSING STAFF....LOOK, I KNOW THAT IT'S A CRAZY IDEA IN THIS DAY AND AGE, BUT DOESN'T IT MAKE SENSE??
YOU KNOW, IT IS NOT THE HOSPITAL THAT THE UNION HAS A BEEF WITH, IT IS THE PATIENTS, THE CONSUMERS OF HEALTH CARE...BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE THE MONEY COMES FROM............
